Tree Tips

Plant trees and shrubs during the dormant season
Choose location carefully keeping in mind the mature height, width, shape and leaf density
Call 811 before you dig to locate underground utilities
Do not plant trees too deep, root flare must be visible
Insure good soil drainage
Match the tree to the soil type
Mulch up & around base of tree
Staking trees after planting is usually not necessary
Avoid planting flowers within the root zone of trees
Prune trees when young
Small pruning cuts are preferred
Avoid pruning newly planted trees except to remove torn, broken or diseased branches
Avoid topping or lion tailing
Prune just outside branch collar
Wound dressing is not necessary except with oak wilt disease
Maintain single dominant leader
Do not prune more than 50%
Do not prune more than 30%
